Trek vs tour vs mixed
Who should walk, who should stay in hotels, and who should add Chitwan or a day hike.
A trek in Nepal usually means walking between teahouses with a pack on your back or a porter beside you. You sleep in simple lodges, eat dal bhat, and gain altitude over several days. It is not camping unless the package says so. A tour stays in hotels. You travel by car, plane, or boat. Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan are the usual mix. Days are full but you return to a proper bed and a shower that more or less works. A mixed trip is what many first-timers actually want: a few city days, one nature or wildlife stop, and either a day hike or a short teahouse walk. Choose this if you are curious about the mountains but not ready to commit two weeks of stairs and cold nights. Walk if you like long days on foot and can accept basic toilets. Stay in hotels if knees, kids, or time make a trek a bad first bet. Add Chitwan or a day hike if you want wildlife or a view without a full trek permit stack.
Choose a trek if
You have 12+ days, you want the high hills, and you are willing to walk 5–7 hours on most days.
Choose a tour if
You want culture, food, and landscapes without sleeping in teahouses. Families and first-timers short on days often start here.
Choose mixed if
You want both. City time plus one short walk or a jungle stay is a honest first Nepal trip.
